The US PGA Tournament is one of the premier golfing events that takes place each year. It is managed by the Professional Golfers Association of America, and it has gained its place as one of the top four tournaments, the Majors, and it will be celebrating its 106th anniversary this season. Taking a private jet charter to the PGA Championships is certainly on the bucket list of most fans of the sport.
It is played in the United States sometime in August every season; the 2021 version of the event will be held at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Charleston, South Carolina between May 17-23.
As mentioned, the PGA Championship is one of the Four Majors in the sport of golf, in addition to the Masters, British and US Open. It wasn’t always such a prominent date on the schedule however.
In the mid-1990s, with the prestige of the tournament lacking, the PGA actually created a marketing campaign around the fact that the PGA Championship was the final chance to become a major champ for the year. It even included the tagline “Glory’s Last Shot”, used in all promotional material and even in CBS telecasts. This made the PGA the only major championship (or actually any pro golf tournament!), to have a full-time marketing slogan.
Last year the event had a total purse of $10 million, and winning this tournament is a big deal for a pro golfer. In line with the other majors, winning the PGA gains numerous privileges which can greatly enhance a player’s career security. PGA champs are automatically invited to play in the other three majors for the next five years, and are exempt from qualifying for the PGA Championship for life. They receive membership on the PGA and European Tours for the following five seasons and invitations to The Players Championship for five years.
It’s always an incredible thrill to watch history in the making, and fans know every major tournament like this one is filled with twists and turns that even the most experienced observers can’t predict. Who will emerge as the story or unlikely hero this year?
